Chantel Merendino
About Me:
Hello, my name is Chantel, or you can call me Chan.
I have over eleven years experience working with children of many different backgrounds and abilities through both Childcare and Nannying settings.
I’ve recently graduated from university as an Art Therapist. I strive to continue my passion of working with children, by combining my past work experience with my love of art, newly studied and past personal understandings about how significantly creativity can support mental health.
I’m also a big advocate for the queer community, as I identify as queer myself, and would be honoured to provide children support with their identity exploration.
My Approach:
My approach is gentle and patient, at first getting to know each other, and allowing the child to grow comfortable working within the safety of the art space and with myself.
I work with a Person-Centred approach, where the child, their presentation and expressions on the day, combined with their goals, are what guide the therapeutic process.
Some days I may offer a directive approach – planned activities suited to the child’s current needs, and other days may be more non-directive – where the child has the opportunity to explore the room and express themselves through their chosen art or play medium. The choice of directive and/or non-directive will be based on what is in the best needs of the child, what is safe for them, and what they’re ready to explore.
Art Therapy can range from drawing, painting, or collage, to dance, drama, movement, play, clay, photography, writing, etc.
Who I Work With:
I work with children of all ages and backgrounds (ranging from 1-18).
I’m also open to offering sibling and caregiver sessions – so please reach out if this is of interest.
Hobbies & Interests:
My main hobbies are drawing, painting, and anything creative – my favourite type of drawing is of architecture and abstract painting.
I have a love for nature, as I find it incredibly calming and therapeutic.
In my down-time I also enjoy reading books, watching movies, and trying new restaurants.
I love spending time with my family, beautiful partner, dog (Frankie), niece, nephew and bump (soon to be son).
