How it works
Intake:
An Intake session is the initial consultation and always the first step for all services. This session is just with the caregivers and therapist, children should not attend. In Intake we will discuss the current issues and presenting symptoms, family composition, child and family history, strengths and interests and treatment goals and planning. Young people 15 years and over are welcome to attend the Intake session if they choose. From 50 minutes up to 90 minutes are allocated for Intake sessions.
Sessions:
Therapy sessions are 30-50 minutes long depending on the age of the child/young person (50 mins for parent sessions) and work towards achieving treatment goals.
Caregiver consultation sessions:
Caregiver involvement and consultation is very important for children under 15 years of age. As it is often difficult and not necessarily advisable to provide progress updates in front of the child; caregiver consultation sessions are a great way to touch base, ask questions and measure change. These sessions enable parents to be part of the process and fully informed about their child's therapeutic journey. The schedule of caregiver consultation sessions is usually every 6th session, however sessions can be arranged to meet the caregivers needs.
When one child enters therapy, it’s easy for families to organise themselves around that child’s needs. Appointments, emotional energy, and daily routines can begin to revolve around the “identified child.”
From a family systems perspective, however, no individual exists in isolation every change in one part of the system influences the whole.
This includes siblings, whose experiences are often quieter but no less important.
There is a particular tenderness in parenting teenagers. Our young people are no longer little children, yet they are not quite adults. They are stretching toward independence, forming stronger opinions, seeking privacy, testing limits, and trying to understand who they are apart from us. And while this growth is expected, it can still feel unsettling for parents.
