Arts Therapy For Caregivers
“Creativity in and of itself is important for remaining healthy, remaining connected to yourself and connected to the world”
- Christianne Strang, former president American Art Therapy Association
Arts Therapy has proven to be highly beneficial for both young people and adults. It is an evidenced based form of psychotherapy, utilising verbal and non-verbal communication to support growth and well being. Sometimes the struggles we experience remain heavy despite having someone to talk with. This is where Arts Therapy could create that shift.
Arts Therapy sessions are relational and person centred and include image making as a tool to externalise the internal self. Arts Therapy supports creative expression, empowerment and a connection to self. When image making, we are not concerned with the end product, but rather the process and connection to our felt sense. Artistic skills are therefore not required but rather an open mind to discover self is necessary.
Theories underpinning our work include Interpersonal Neurobiology, Polyvagal Theory and the Expressive Therapies Continuum. These theories support individualist, person centred growth.
Neurobiologically, verbal therapies tap into our cortex, which consists of conditioned responses. Arts Therapy enables access to our whole brain, including our brainstem, midbrain, limbic system, and cortex to process emotions, experience moments of focus and create new ways to see the world. Repeated Arts Therapy sessions support shifts in conditioned thinking and creates new neural pathways to support personal wellbeing.
These sessions are for adults in a parenting/caregiving role.
